Natural Perfumery-Real Components=Phenomenal Results?

In Natural Perfumery: is "real" always better? Should man-made substitutes or isolates be as venerated as the natural constituents?

Perfumery-Real components = phenomenal results?

Ahhh, so many oils......so little time, lol. I have recently started working with essential oils, absolutes and more, you know, trying my hand at Natural Perfumery. What a terrific experience. Just the aroma of a pure and natural botanical extract can be a mystical experience. I cannot fathom the reason why the popular (commercial) blends of perfumes and colognes, which are ubiquitous in today's retail market, have been relegated to the use of synthetic compounds. I guess that cost of material and tenacity of product are the dominant, ruling, factors in today's Perfume Industry. If I were a celebrity or a world famous designer, I think that I would be embarrassed to associate my name with a product that contained as much as 90% fabricated ingredients. It seems like "everything" these days is focused on the sole basis of the "almighty dollar". Well, not me! Whatever "I" put on my skin, from here on out, is gonna be "real" baby! I will try not compromise on the level of my standards and expectations. I wonder if anyone else out there, feels the same way? Anyone feel like "kicking it around"? Unless I blow myself up while attempting to reduce the alcohol levels in some of my tinctures, I shall return, lol.

Well, enough of my tirade, lol. I don't honestly mean I disrespect man-made chemicals, as some of the wondrous aromas do not exist in their natural state or are so miniscule in extraction volumes as to deem them cost prohibitive. I guess it's like everything else in life; one shouldn't "over do" anything to excess. I guess there's a place for everything and everything has it's place. I'm just truly in awe at the "depths" inherent to the natural essences at this stage. My first couple of compositions do, in fact, contain "fragrance oils" and I have a few people wearing them with some excellent remarks of them. So, I guess we should not cast any stones, lest we are not perfect, lol. I'm far from it, lol.

Hi Frank, well you know I love the naturals but don't see why I wouldn't use the chemicals. I can't think of a reason why I shouldn't use them. I like the real thing as well but what is the real thing? An absolute or essential oil isn't the real thing, because it's distilated it misses some components. An absolute of the rose for example doesn't smell like the living rose. And even though I like the smell of it, I don't want to smell like rose. A perfume needs more, a mystery something you can't put your finger on, but touch you anyway. Somehow some people think that natural is good and chemicals are bad, where is that comming from? When you look at the site of IFRA there are restricted chemicals and naturals, so natural doesn't mean that it's safe.

Jenny, I bow to your wisdom. The more I research the facts and fallacies, the more I realize that it takes "all" kinds of elements to produce a successful product. And as I reflect upon your comments, I am convinced as to the credibility of your convictions. After all, it is true that everything in life is composed of chemicals, and chemicals don't have to be synthetic, chemical are also natural, in fact most chemicals "are" natural. So, "chemical" is not a bad word. I now realize the value the nature identical chemicals possess as well. In fact, even the totally synthetic chemicals have a value for usage. So, I concede to your philosophy and will never prejudge anything until I have at least reviewed all of the aspects in full.
